Promote Community Conversations into Knowledge Assets

Contributions received within a community can be transformed into knowledge assets. As participants reputation model grows within the community more responsibilities may be granted to valued community participants to either recommend solutions that can be utilized or they could be invited to assist in determining which user generated content can be harvested from the within the community into a more structured knowledgebase. Fished out content can then be accessed, analyzed and validated by an in-house team into useful solution information that could be published in the company’s support website.

Discussion forums are used by many companies to trigger communication and knowledge sharing among groups that might otherwise be disconnected. For example, problem escalation can be moved from traditional phone escalation to collaborative forums. Collaborative forum is an open door to having more relevant experts who may not necessarily be part of the support team (but are alerted via topic subscription) or share the same geographies collaborate to resolve an issue. The discussion thread provides the content that can be harvested into a solution article. Participation should not be left unrewarded. Companies can introduce incentives based on certain variables such as re-use counts of solution, timeliness of solution, to encourage participation.

The last 24hrs left the world shocked to its bones as Barack Obama makes history to be the first black African-American President of America. More interesting is the fact that Obama has been the first Democrat candidate to embrace Web 2.0 technology in his campaign.

He has been on major social networks like Facebook and MySpace to attract young voters. He used Youtube video sharing site alot for sharing campaign speeches to a wider audience so that no one was left out. Obama also launched his own social network, My.BarackObama. Obama’s social network allowed users and supporters create their own profile, invite and add friends, join and create groups and participate in fund raising.

You would agree with me that his efforts in using Web 2.0 paid off for him in a great deal . He got a landslide victory! Would you expect less from Web 2.0?

The success of your online community is highly dependent on member Recognition and Reward. When you setup a social network for your company, your customers become the primary part of the service. Their participation in the community is similar to being part of other social networks they normally will use. Recognizing vital contribution impresses on the customer that their views are heard by you the business owner. Customers are most likely to stay on your network when they are shown their precence is noticed and appreciated by the company. For companies with a large customer-base, you are not likely to know all your customers, but an online collaboration using a social network provides the opportunity for finding high-value contributors. Contributions made by customers provide key information critical to resolving customer issues. The contribution received has a tendency to adding value to the overall business of the company. Product and service enhancement needs are exposed by contributors within the community. But how best can the community encourage vital contributions? How can you identify high-value contributions and content? The best way to identify content that bring value to your business will be dependent on the rating system and reputation model that is used by all to rate each contribution made to the community forum. This way each contributor receives points that accumulate to build a customer reputation with your brand. Customers with high reputation can be complemented for their efforts and participation through a reward program. An effective reward program would encourage continuous participation and keep loyal customers around for a very long time. My next post will highlight four other best practices that can improve customer service through community-based collaboration.

We’ve launched a document sharing tool on Beezbox Intranet 2.0. Employees and project teams will find this very useful. You don’t have to mail an attached excel sheet to everyone in your unit or team, just share it. Once you have setup a company social network on Beezbox platform this tool will be made available to you. The application supports all documents created using Microsoft Office and PDF applications. On-the-go employees can see documents created and shared by colleagues in their groups. Stay tuned for more intranet 2.0 tools as we bring both work and fun on a single platform.

Most portals mirror the academic setting of the institution. I’ve seen a number of portals packed with necessary and unnecessary tools. With web 2.0 as the focus of the web space it’s high time schools get to incorporate familiar tools that students and lecturers use when visiting social networking sites. University or high school portal designed to have similar social tools will find students spending more time on their academic portal than portals without social tools. Blogs, wikis, multimedia feature, podcast are examples of tools that can expand and foster collaboration and communication among students and lecturers. Statistic shows that students make up a greater part of social networking sites. They spend more time networking with peers from school on sites like Facebook. Institutions that do not wake up to the reality of Web 2.0 trends would find their portals sparsely visited by students. Creating a social network that incorporates both academic and social tools will keep students and academic staff closer while adding real value to the learning experience.

I particularly liked this article I read on Mashable.com “What Happens to Our Profile After We Die?”. Mike Fruchter did a good work on bringing up things we never actually take into consideration. With the rapid growth of social network users on MySpace, Facebook, Linkedin, Plaxo and many more, social profiles seem to be more alive on cyberspace than ever. You are almost considered behind time if you don’t have at least one social profile somewhere on the net. I particularly find it strange when someone says to me “I don’t hookup with any social network”. What flashes to my mind is “Do you even have an email box?” Because I don’t think you have used the internet lately. Pardon my sarcasms. It’s just that even the older ones seem to be interested in social tools like Skype. Last week my mom and I went to get her new laptop, even though she is far from being good with computers, she can’t imagine not knowing what’s up. I was shocked to hear her ask me about Skype. Now that’s one student added to my computer classes.
No matter how we view it, what happens to our social profiles after we die should be considered by all social network providers. I think a column for deceased members should be included in their “Terms of Use”. Would the deceased member profile remain a “monument” online? Or would you rather have it terminated? Or better still we could move it to MyDeathSpace.com

Mnemos www.mnemos20.com

Recently Balthazar launched its branded Mnemos Social Network on our Beezbox platform. MNEMOS is a household name when it comes to professional skills development methodology. The new Mnemos 2.0, is geared towards executives and managers seeking to develop expertise in Management. Balthazar objective is to use this tool as a medium to retain professionals who have received MNEMOS training as well as offering them the flexibility to develop and purchase additional seminar cycles. Furthermore, the social network serves as a revenue generator for Balthazar as it offers its cloud of corporate customers (SIEMENS, AIR FRANCE, SNCF, FNAC, EADS,…) a community strategized for employees with online coaching.

Footemotion www.footemotion.com

Footemotion is a multimedia journal (same concept as “La Rue 89″) dedicated to football for children between the ages 6 to 15 years. Footemotion targets all amateur clubs that commune in France. The social network is set to bring young football players on to a single platform. Footemotion’s business model is to “catch them while young”. A nice strategy to find future “Ronaldino” . Football loving players and their parents will find Footemotion very exicting.

Are you currently considering implementing a social network or a social media tool in your organisation? Wondering how to go about it? Drop me a comment or a PM.
